Lift with your legs!

“Lift with your legs”.  It’s a phrase we’ve all heard, but not something we all take to heart, or even fully understand. Did you know that lifting objects with poor mechanics can contribute to minor degenerative changes in our spines that can accumulate over time, leading to more significant changes?  These changes can manifest as back pain or leg symptoms.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when lifting objects:

  1. Squat down with feet about shoulder width apart or staggered widely around the object.
  2. Get as close as possible to the object.
  3. Gently suck in your stomach.
  4. Pick up the object, keeping it close to your body.
  5. Turn your entire body to make turns (don’t twist at your waist).
  6. Re-squat down to lower the object to its new location.

What brand of shoes are the best?

What brand of shoes are the best?

The brand of shoe isn’t actually the most important factor when considering shoes. It’s whether the shoe style compliments your foot type. For example, if you have a flexible foot and a lower arch, you would likely benefit from a stiffer, more supportive shoe to provide more stability. Conversely, if you have a more rigid foot with a higher arch, you would likely feel best with a more flexible shoe to provide more shock absorption.

Selecting appropriate footwear can not only help expedite recovery time from injuries, but also help prevent them in the first place.
